Soldier of fortune Payback (2008)

Soldier of Fortune: Payback is the third installment of the Soldier of Fortune game series. Unlike the previous two Soldier of Fortune games, which were developed by Raven Software utilizing the Quake 2 and Quake 3 engines, Payback was developed by Cauldron HQ, developed with Cauldron's in-house CloakNT engine, used in their previous First Person Shooter game, Chaser. This game is the first game of the series released for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. The game was released on 14 November 2007. Upon being refused classification by Australia's OFLC, Activision is eyeing an early 2008 release date for that country.

Lock on: Modern air combat. (ISO)

Thankfully, Ubisoft and Eagle Dynamics give the community more credit than some other developers have. The creators of the Flanker series have managed to create a sim that combines the breadth of Jane's USAF with the intense accuracy of Falcon and that's a rare accomplishment in the genre. The game has stepped away from the purely dynamic mission generation that was initially promised, but the alternatives as presented in the final version are still quite compelling.

The conflict at the heart of Lock On takes place above and around the Black Sea. Based on precise satellite data, the maps here are fantastically detailed and offer a reasonable variety of geography. The fictional conflict allows
players to take to the skies in eight separate planes. You can fly fast and low in the A-10s and SU-25s, leap off the deck in your SU-33, or try your ass in the office of the sleek F-15 or SU-27. There are also three separate versions of the MiG 29 to play with.

A range of play options are available right at the start, from the instant action missions to the massively comprehensive mission editor. When you get in the air, you'll find that the challenge level is quite high. (You can scale the difficulty by enabling unlimited ammo, fuel and limiting crashes.) Even with the aids on, you'll find that the enemy offers a serious challenge having a good understanding of energy management and radar profiles.

As you might guess by now, this is not an arcade style simulation and you'll need to have a serious understanding of how the systems of each aircraft perform in real life if you're to have any hope of using them correctly in the game. And there's a broad range of systems to understand here -- from the A-10's close-in ground attack weapons to the long-distance dedications of the MiGs. The flight models in Lock On also reveal a tremendous difference in performance based on the plane you choose. The A-10, certainly a plane that sim-heads have a great affection for, feels much more straightforward than the MiGs for instance.

Thankfully there are a number of tutorials you can take on to learn the ins and outs of the aircraft. Each plane has its own tutorial section that covers the specific abilities of that plane. In this sense, Lock On really rewards the time you invest in it more so than a lot of other sims. You'll also need to pay attention to the different cockpit layouts for each of the planes. Those of you who are familiar with Russian acronyms will have an easier time reading the Russian labels on the displays. In keeping with the sterile presentation of the rest of the game shell, there are no voice overs in the cockpit and you'll be forced to read each tutorial tip as it appears on the screen.

And there's a lot to learn here. The radar model alone is quite comprehensive and will take some getting used to on the part of new pilots. (There is a dumbed-down version of the radar that simplifies many of the issues found in the real-world equivalents.) Things like doppler effects and terrain masking are modeled in the game so you'll need to act smartly as well as quickly to take advantage of every feature of this system. The upside to all this realism is that you'll feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment once you figure out what the hell you're doing. But it does take a while even for sim fans to wrap their brain around all the different planes here, particularly when moving from the ground-oriented planes to the air-to-air ones.

Quake 4 PC FULL

While Doom was the game that would make id Software a gaming-household name in the early '90s, over the years, the company shifted its focus away from the Doom games. As PC hardware and 3D acceleration became better and better, id became much more focused on engine development. Those engines were the underlying technology that powered the games in the Quake series, which began in 1996. Quake was among the first PC first-person shooters to let you take your multiplayer matches onto the Internet, and over the years, the series has become synonymous with great technology and exciting multiplayer. Now, in 2005, the roles of id's games have reversed a bit. The company's most recent engine is the one built for Doom 3, and Quake 4 runs on this same engine. Furthermore, Quake 4 wasn't even developed by id internally; it instead outsourced game development to the capable minds at Raven Software, who have turned in a fantastic-looking game with a great single-player campaign. The multiplayer, however, is underwhelming.

The three previous Quake games have all had very little to do with one another. The first game's story almost felt more like a retelling of Doom, dealing with inappropriately opened portals that spew out all sorts of horrific demons. Quake II ditched that storyline in favor of an Earth-versus-alien conflict that had you crash-landing on the alien homeworld in search of revenge. Quake III Arena was multiplayer focused, with no true single-player storyline other than that a wide collection of warriors--some taken from the Doom and Quake games--had been pulled out of their own timelines and into this futuristic battle arena. Quake 4 doubles back and picks up where Quake II left off. That nameless space marine from Quake II has apparently killed the Makron, the leader of the Strogg forces, and now it's up to you to get in there and try to finish the job. But, of course, things aren't quite what they seem.

You can use the keyboard or joystick to play Hippo Hop.Using the Default Keyboard Settings, press the X key or Spacebar to make Timon jump. Press the up arrow to make Timon jump forward. Press the down arrow to make Timon jump backward. Press the left/right arrow keys and the X key to make Timon jump left/right. Press the left/right arrow keys to make Timon walk left/right. Pressing the Z key in conjunction with any of the above key combinations accelerates Timon.

BUG DROP

Play as either Timon or Pumbaa. Timon is player 1 and Pumbaa is player 2. You can use the keyboard or joystick to play Bug Drop.

Using the Default Keyboard Settings to control Timon, press the left and right arrow keys to move the bug pair left and right. The <> key rotates the bug pair clockwise. The down arrow key increases the drop speed of the bug pair.

Using the Default Keyboard Settings to control Pumbaa, press the Z key and C key to move the bug pair left and right. Press the 1 key to rotate the bug pair counterclockwise. Press the 2 key to rotate the bug pair clockwise. The X key increases the drop speed of the bug pair.

Using the Joystick for both Timon & Pumbaa, the left and right axis moves the bug pair left and right. Press button 1 to rotate the bug pair counterclockwise. Press button 2 to rotate the bug pair clockwise. The down axis increases the drop speed of the bug pair.

Half Life I

Black Mesa Research Facility, an ultra-secret laboratory under government contract, conducting top-secret and extremely volatile experiments with stuff we're not supposed to know about. You play as Gordon Freeman, a Black Mesa employee. And this morning, as usual, you pit your way to the research facility for a run-of-the-mill experiment.But this morning's experiment is not quite as ordinary as you thought. Odd things begin to happen as you make your way to one of the Black Mesa test chambers. Even weirder things happen when you start to move the test sample towards the antimass-spectrometer.

And you ain't seen nothing yet. Yes indeed, the experiment went wrong. Aliens from the planet Xen have suddenly invaded the facility, injuring and/or killing many of the employees. The Marines have come to the facility to kill off the aliens...and the surviving witnesses of the accident. You know what that means: you'll have to fight your way through aliens and Marines to get to the top of the Black Mesa complex. When you face your ultimate challenge, you'll see why being a government employee really does suck.

Road Rash

Road Rash has long been a favorite among those gamers with a penchant for blood and speed. Originally released for the Sega Genesis earlier, the first version sported unprecedented graphics and action that was fast enough to give the player a real adrenaline rush. No other motorcycle game before Road Rash had been this realistic, and certainly none had incorporated combat. Each of RR's many incarnations since has offered graphic improvements upon the original and has taken advantage of the varied platforms' power, but all have failed to be as inspiring as they could have been. Until recently, the game lacked a critical competitive element; after all, it's really not much fun to wail on a fellow "rasher" with a chain if you know they're just part of the game. If that "rasher" is being controlled by your roommate or your girlfriend, however, the action takes on a whole new dimension. With the new Windows 95 version of Road Rash and its eight-player capability, the old standard now has the power to addict.

Over a modem or on a network, players can attempt to blast their real live opponents off the road or bash their heads in with clubs. Up to eight human-controlled bikes can be on screen at the same time. This is all handled pretty efficiently, especially when you consider the speed at which you're traveling. Latency does pose a problem, though. Imagine you're flying down the 101, with not an obstacle in sight, when suddenly, your modem hiccups. After 10 seconds of frozen screen, you find that you're picking yourself up from a nasty collision with a large building. Now how did that happen? Not only does this ruin your race standing, it also slams you back to reality right quick. Flaws aside, though, multi-player racing does add a lot to the game.

Aside from the multi-player mode, you've seen this "new" version of Road Rash before. You'll recognize the now-somewhat-outdated soundtrack featuring all your favorite "who-the-hell-is-that" recording artists like Paw and Hammerbox. (All right, Soundgarden's in there too - I'll be fair.) Unfortunately, just like all the other versions of RR, right when you enter the race and want to hear some head-banging rock, it's replaced by the world's cheesiest General MIDI music. A little less annoying, but a problem nevertheless, is the fact that EA decided to use separate .WAV files for the sound effects. The result is what we'll call the "Out-Of-Sync-Super-8-Projector" effect. Picture yourself smacking into the grille of an oncoming pickup only to hear yourself grunt in pain a full second later. Pretty annoying, especially if you've played the more efficient PlayStation version of RR.

Frankly, there are some changes that could and should have been made between the 3DO version (released over two years ago) and this "all-new" one. Sure, they've souped up the graphics for super-nifty Direct Draw 2 and there's virtually no load time from main menu to race time, but what about the gameplay? The relatively recent Road Rash 3 for Genesis had new weapons and tracks. Not so here - the characters, bikes, weapons, and tracks in this version appear to be identical to the 3DO version, and that's the biggest problem with the game. Why not incorporate at least a few of the changes made in Road Rash 3 into the Windows title and give gamers the most up-to-date release available?

The only other flaws aren't really problems of the game, but of the Windows 95 OS itself. For some reason, it's kind of hard to control a speeding crotch rocket using just two keys on a keyboard. This holds especially true when Windows spontaneously decides its key buffer is full, beeps loudly, and locks, thereby leaving you out of control for a few seconds. It's not quite as annoying as the screen lag problem, but can still ruin your game.

Quirks aside, Road Rash's ride-and-bludgeon formula still works, and it's still quite a game. If you have the ability to play it over a network, it's one of the coolest experiences available, especially if you're familiar with the original title. Words just cannot describe the warm feeling you get when you realize that those aren't just computer drones you're thrashing, but people who up until recently were your friends. If you don't have a network, or you're short on friends, you'll probably be disappointed with this one. When it comes to one-player Road Rashing, even the jerky 3DO version is better.

Scooby Doo: Mystery of the Fun Park Phantom

Scooby Doo: Mystery of the Fun Park Phantom is a 1999 mystery computer game developed by Engineering Animation, Inc. (EAI) and published by SouthPeak Interactive. The game was released for Microsoft Windows and was, in fact, the first commercial Scooby-Doo game for the Windows operating system. It is intended for young children up to young teens.

Backstory
The "Mystery Inc." gang find themselves stranded near an old farmhouse adjacent to an apparently abandoned amusement park. Approaching the farmhouse for help with their van, the gang learns that the Gobs, the residents of the home, own the adjacent park, Gobs O' Fun. However, the park is being haunted by a phantom, scaring customers away. Without any customers, the Gobs are on the brink of bankruptcy, which will force them to sell the park.
The gang agrees to help the Gobs find the culprit in exchange for help getting their van repaired.

Development
Designed by Rick Raymer, the game was originally slated to be called Scooby Doo: Mystery of the Gobs O' Fun Ghoul, but was changed by SouthPeak during development.
SouthPeak, with an arrangement with Time-Warner, provided the team with videotapes of all 25 original half-hour episodes of Scooby-Doo to help them inject the game with an authentic feel.
After the initial game design was complete, Raymer designed a full board game of the proposed computer game. An entire game board complete with game pieces representing the Scooby characters was produced by the art team. Mike Hasson, director of EAI, later exclaimed this to be a terrific waste of time and resources. The development team brought in a group of the target demographic, children between the ages of seven and eleven, in order to test the game. Raymer acted as the gamemaster, performing the management of the game that would eventually be handled by the computer. One member of the development team paired up with each player and acted as a mentor, helping them know what could and couldn't be done each turn.

The focus group was lukewarm to the gameplay, the rewards and the general feel of the game. Only minor modifications were needed before executing the proposed design.

Bee Movie The Game

Based on DreamWorks Animation’s Bee Movie film due out 2007 fall, Bee Movie Game lets players race, chase and fly their way through an adrenaline-fueled world of adventure as they experience the hilarious antics of Barry B. Benson, a dynamic and daring bee who knows there is more to life than making honey.
Bee Movie Game of course takes you into the world of Dreamworks' CGI film, Bee Movie, and in doing so it juggles plentiful game styles. From free roaming car diving to pollen collecting mini-games, it has plenty on offer, though most of your time is spent exploring a 3D world, on foot, or using the power of your bee's wings.
With so many game parodies and styles on offer, there are numerous controls and gameplay styles to grasp, but almost all are realised in a way that makes them instinctive and uncomplicated. The camera that captures the action occasionally makes things a little fiddly, and on very rare occasions things are slightly challenging. On the whole though, Bee Movie Game treads a fine line between frustrating difficulty and patronising simplicity, and as a result is perfectly pitched at the young audience it has been made for.

There's a reassuring U rating on the cover thanks to the BBFC, who also handle all film certification. Bee Movie Game certainly deserves that rating. It never nears anything scary, and as violent as it get is when you have to fire pollen at dragonflies with a mysterious predisposition towards suffering from hay fever. Far from being disturbing or encouraging disruptive behaviour, the game is quaint, cute and gentle, and rather picturesque.
The text is never overwhelming or demanding, and none of the adult orientated jokes that will drift over your child's head hide anything that would be difficult or embarrassing to explain to a youngster if they did press the issue.
While the visuals are not especially amazing in terms of technical prowess, they go someway beyond being merely competent, and as the game develops there really are some very attractive moments. Combined with the charming musical score and quick wit, the total package is brilliant to absorb.
Most impressive is that the humour, character and style of the film have made the translation to the game, and at times it is genuinely hilarious, cleverly parodying gaming stereotypes and clichés from Dreamworks and Pixar movies. The script is surprisingly well written, and some truly brilliant QTE sections really do give a feel for being in a scene from the recent movie.
Much of the movie's Hollywood voice cast returns for the video game, including Jerry Seinfeld as Barry Bee. Sadly it appears as though Vanessa, voiced by Renee Zellweger in the movie, is voiced by a sound-alike in the game.
Quite surprisingly, Bee Movie Game really is quite good. Compared to so many cinematic tie-ins, it is well considered, has occasional moments of originality, and definitely seems to avoid relying on its license to make up for bad design. Out of all the Pixar and Dreamworks games, it is absolutely among one of the best, and would make for a brilliant Christmas present if you're looking to satisfy the kids over the festive season.

Following the third defeat of Sigma, Cain Labs issues an initiative to create a supplementary military force to complement the Maverick Hunters. The army, called the Repliforce, is a strict military regime led by General and his second-in-command, Colonel.

Six months following the inception of the group, Cain Labs finds its methods to be ineffective, questionable, and potentially dangerous in the Maverick defense.
